What the Broadcom vSAN deal desk is anchoring quotes to in Q3 2026.

The vSAN anchor moved twice in the first half of 2026. The current anchor produces a higher headline number than buyers expect and a different conversation than the one most procurement teams prepared for.

The Broadcom vSAN deal desk changed what it anchors a renewal quote to twice between January 2026 and the start of Q3. The Desk has read 11 vSAN renewal quotes since 1 May 2026 and the anchor pattern is consistent enough across the cohort to publish. Buyers approaching a vSAN renewal in the next 90 days will see a quote that is built on a different unit, sourced from a different reference, and signed off at a different level of authority than the quote the same buyers received in 2024 or the early part of 2025. The opening number is higher. The path to a lower number is also different.

This piece is a Calendar entry. It is what the Desk is seeing this quarter, in plain language, with the figures the Desk can verify against signed contracts. It is not a forecast. The anchor moves often enough that a forecast would be obsolete by the time it published. What follows is what is true today.

Three changes are visible in the quote pattern. The unit the desk anchors against has moved from raw capacity to consumed capacity with a per terabyte multiplier that includes a reserved overhead band. The reference price the desk anchors against has moved from the prior contract to a refreshed regional band that the desk does not disclose unless asked. The authority for movement off the anchor has moved one level up the desk hierarchy for any reduction over a threshold the Desk has reverse engineered to be roughly 12 percent against the new opening number.

The unit shift: from raw capacity to consumed plus reserve

Through 2024 and most of 2025 the vSAN quote anchored against raw capacity entitlements. The buyer paid for the capacity provisioned, on a per terabyte basis, regardless of utilisation. The 2026 quote anchors against consumed capacity at the renewal anchor date plus a reserved overhead band that the desk computes from a forward growth assumption. The desk's forward growth assumption for the cohort the Desk has reviewed is between 17 and 24 percent over the new term. The buyer who walks in with a raw capacity number and asks for a refresh of the prior unit ends up paying for the prior unit at the new rate. The buyer who walks in with a documented consumption number and a documented growth profile anchors the conversation on the consumed plus reserve unit and saves the difference between the two.

The opportunity inside the unit shift sits in the reserved overhead band. The desk's default reserve assumption is roughly conservative against the buyer. A documented growth profile that runs below the desk's default reduces the reserve. The reduction on the reserve flows directly into the renewal number. The Desk's median observation across the cohort is that a documented growth profile produces a reserve reduction of between 6 and 11 percent of the headline quote, before any other movement.

The reference shift: regional band, not prior contract

The 2024 vSAN quote often referenced the buyer's prior contract as the price floor for any negotiation. The 2026 quote references a refreshed regional band the desk maintains internally. The desk does not disclose the band unless the buyer asks for it in writing as part of a documented information request. Buyers who do ask receive a band that is wider than the prior contract reference would suggest, and a placement inside the band that is usually in the upper third.

The placement inside the band is the part of the conversation most procurement teams skip. Asking the desk to justify the placement, with the comparable cohort and the placement rationale, is a procedural request the desk has authority to respond to. The Desk's view across the 11 quotes reviewed is that the placement justification rarely holds up to documented buyer side comparables. The buyer who arrives with comparables in hand moves placement down by between 8 and 14 percent of the headline quote on the median engagement.

The authority shift: one level up, at roughly 12 percent

Through most of 2025 the vSAN deal desk could clear a reduction of up to roughly 18 percent off the opening anchor without escalation. The 2026 desk's authority has tightened. Reductions over roughly 12 percent escalate one level up, to a sign off the Desk has reverse engineered to be a regional commercial lead rather than the desk itself. The escalation is procedural rather than substantive in most cases. The number does move. The timing does not. A buyer who needs the reduction inside a renewal calendar of less than 21 days will not get the answer in time.

The implication for the buyer is that timing matters more than it did. A vSAN renewal that needs a reduction of 15 percent or more should open the conversation no later than 60 days before the anchor date. A vSAN renewal that needs a reduction of 25 percent or more should open the conversation 90 days out and should expect a documented escalation path inside the desk before the number lands.

What the desk will not move on this quarter

Three items on the vSAN quote are sitting outside the desk's movement authority for Q3 2026. The product support uplift band is held at a centrally set rate that the desk cannot adjust. The reserved overhead floor sits at a minimum of 10 percent regardless of growth profile. The contract term floor is held at 36 months for any quote that includes the consumed plus reserve unit. Buyers who try to move these items burn meeting time on conversations the desk does not have authority to conclude. Buyers who acknowledge the immovable items and concentrate the conversation on the items the desk can move arrive at the same total reduction with less calendar burn.

What we have seen on live deals

A North American manufacturer brought a vSAN renewal to the Desk in early May. The opening quote was 32 percent above the prior contract value, sized on raw capacity at the new rate with the desk's default reserve. The Desk rebuilt the buyer's information set around documented consumption, a documented growth profile, and a placement justification challenge. The buyer's procurement team filed the information request in writing. The desk responded with the regional band and the placement rationale. The buyer challenged the placement. The final quote landed 11 percent below the prior contract value, a movement of 43 percent from the opening anchor. The conversation took 47 days from first meeting to signed renewal. No part of the movement came from threatening migration. The movement came from anchoring the conversation on the unit and the reference the desk was actually using.
